1.3 The Global Navigation Menu
In the previous guides, you have learned the three main areas that are visible when you are logged in Canvas. In this guide, you will learn the general overview of each icon and its purpose on the Global Navigation Menu.
The Global Navigation Menu is located on the left side of every page in Canvas. Each menu provides quick access to frequently used Canvas features, including Account, Dashboard, Courses, Calendar, Inbox, History, Commons, Studio, and the Help menu.
[1] Account
Account menu is where you can log out and update your user profile. Refer to 1.4 Canvas Account Overview for more information.
[2] Dashboard
Dashboard menu displays all your Published Courses and Unpublished Courses. Refer to 1.2 Dashboard Overview for more information.
[3] Courses
Courses menu is organized by published courses (1) and unpublished courses (2), click the All course (3) link to view all your Canvas courses.
[4] Calendar
Calendar menu shows all the calendar events of all your courses.
[5] Inbox
Inbox menu shows the conversations between professors and students in all your courses. Refer to 1.5 Canvas Inbox for more information.
[6] History
History menu shows up to three weeks of your Canvas course page view history, which makes it easy to navigate back to a recent page.
[7] Commons
Commons is a shared platform where you can view other Canvas users’ courses both inside and outside NEL. Note: You need to upload your courses to the Commons for it to be visible by others. The course you are creating will not be automatically shared here.
[8] Help
Canvas Help menu displays links with Canvas support chat and hotline. Note: Canvas Support can be accessed by chat or phone 24/7. This is helpful when Learning Innovation Hub is not available.
