Module 1: Introductory class; UNIT 1: Basics & History of Management
Welcome to Module 1
Many different paths can lead to a top management position. A technical skill like software programming can give you a foundation as a programmer that advances you to team leader. Skills in marketing might move you up to a director of marketing position. Sales skills might advance you to managing a sales territory or a product line. No matter which path you take, successful top managers need to perform the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. In this opening unit, you will begin learning how to perform these functions and become a successful manager, and set the stage for the remainder of the course.
