Translating Websites & Documents

You can translate webpages and documents into many languages on some devices. See below for directions on how to translate websites and documents using computer web browsers and mobile devices.

Website Translation

  • In your computer web browser, go to Google Translate Links to an external site..
  • At the top of the browser window, click "Websites."
  • We recommend setting the original language to "Detect language."
  • In the website URL box, enter a URL (web link).
  • Click "Go."

Switch Between Original & Translated Website

On Medium/Large Screens:

  • Option 1: At the top, click the "Languages" tab.
  • Option 2: At the top, click the Down Arrow to open the drop down menu. Choose "Translate" or "Original."

On Small Screens:

  • Option 1: At the top, click the "Languages" tab.
  • Option 2: At the top, click "More." In the expanded menu, click the toggle next to "Show original page" to switch between the original and translated website.

Change the Language of a Translated Website

After you open a translated website, you can change the translation language:

  • Check that you're on the translated website.
  • At the top, in the "Languages" tab, click the Down Arrow and select your desired language.

Translate Documents

You can translate documents up to 10mb in any of these formats: docx, pdf, pptx, and xslx. PDF files must be 300 pages or less.

Important: Document translation isn't available on smaller screens and mobile. You can find text in images and scanned PDF pages in the output document if they are not translated.

  • In your browser, go to Google Translate Links to an external site..
  • At the top, click "Documents."
  • Choose the languages to translate to and from.
    • To automatically set the default language of a document, click "Detect language."
  • Click "Browse your computer."
  • Select the file you want to translate.
  • Click "Translate" and wait for the document to finish translating.
  • Click "Download translation" to download your translated document.
