Course Description

This course will explore the history of U.S. foreign relations from the colonial period to the present day. Students will study the individuals,

issues, events, and technology that have played a role in the economic and territorial expansion of the United States and the emergence of the

U.S. as a world power. This course will also examine the more recent period of conflict and cooperation as the United States continues to

define itself and its role in the ever-changing context of international relations.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

Formulate informed views and arguments on issues related to various aspects of U.S. foreign relations. (CLO:1)
Analyze policies and decisions in diverse historical contexts. (CLO:2)
Discuss the geographical context of specific events, policies, and economic and strategic issues. (CLO:3)
Examine the chronological context of S. foreign relations.(CLO:4)

Essential Question for History of US Foreign Relations

What is an essential question and why are we using one in this course?

Essential questions (EQ) help students connect new knowledge with prior knowledge. This courses uses an EQ to help you make patterns and deeper connections to what you are learning AND puts you in charge of your learning! We want you to develop the thinking tools to question your surrounding and drive learning over the long term.

It this sounds complicated right now, don't worry. I will guide you throughout the course so that you know how to use the EQ to think about what you are learning and how your thinking has changed.

Our EQ is "What is the role of the US in the world?"
