Welcome to Module 1

Welcome to your first module!

In this module, we will be exploring the first chapter of your textbook. Chapter 1 deals with the orientation of the human body. You will explore some concepts in the chapter you may have had from other science classes, such as Biology. This should be a refresher for you and we will review many of these concepts.

Also in Chapter 1, we will explore how the human body is organized and how we can communicate effectively with each other about the human body. This is done by referring to the body in relative terms. This concept will also be covered in your lab assignment for this week as well.

If you have not already done so, please purchase your textbook and register for Mastering as soon as you can. Please begin reading chapter 1. I have posted below the learning objectives for each of these chapters as a study guide to help you prepare for homework, quizzes, and the midterm exam. Please see the syllabus for the assignments and their due dates.

Module Learning Outcomes

As a result of the instruction in this module for Chapter 1, students will be able to:

1. Define anatomy and physiology and describe their subdivisions. (CO 1, 10, 11)
2. Explain the principles of complementarity. (CO 1, 10, 11)
3. Name the different levels of structural organization that make up the human body, and explain their relationships (CO 1,2, 8, 10,11)
4. List the 11 organ systems of the body, identify their components, and briefly explain the major function(s) of each system (CO 1, 2, 8,10, 11)
5. List the functional characteristics necessary to maintain life in humans. (CO 1,8, 9, 10,11)
6. List the survival needs of the body. (CO 1, 8, 9, 10, 11)
7. 1 Define homeostasis and explain its significance. (CO 1,8,9,10,11)
8. Describe how negative feedback and positive feedback maintain body homeostasis. (CO 1, 8, 9, 10,11)
9. Describe the relationship between homeostatic imbalance and disease. (CO 1, 8, 9,10,11)
10. Describe anatomical position (CO 1, 10, 11)
11. Use correct anatomical terms to describe body directions, regions, and body planes or sections (CO 1,10,11)
12. Locate and name the major body cavities and their subdivisions and associated membranes, and list the major organs contained within them (CO 1, 10, 11)
13. Name the four quadrants or nine regions of the abdominopelvic cavity and list the organs they contain (CO 1, 10, 11)
