Welcome to Module 12

Welcome to Week 12. In this week's module, we will explore Chapter 13, The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). Chapter 13 will cover the peripheral spinal nerves, cranial nerves, and reflexes.

Mastering assignments will include homework, labs, and quizzes for this chapter. In addition, dissection videos are incorporated into the Mastering assignments. Please check your Canvas email for the PowerPoints.

Please use the learning objectives listed in the Week 12 Module as a study guide for the quizzes and the exams.

As a result of the instruction in this module, Chapter 13, students will be able to:

1. Define the PNS and list its components. (CO 1,8,10,11)

2. Classify general sensory receptors by stimulus detected, body location, and structure. (CO 1,8,10,11)

3. Outline the events that lead to sensation and perception. (CO 1,8,10,11)

4. Describe receptor and generator potentials and sensory adaptation. (CO 1,8,10,11)

5. Describe the main aspects of sensory perception. (CO 1,8,10,11)

6. Describe the general structure of a nerve. (CO 1,8,10,11)

7. Define ganglion and indicate the general body location of ganglia. (CO 1,8,10,11)

8. Follow the process of nerve regeneration. (CO 1,8,10,11)

9. Name the 12 pairs of cranial nerves; indicate the body region and structures innervated by each. (CO 1,8,10,11)

10. Describe the general structure of a spinal nerve and the general distribution of its rami. (CO 1,8,10,11)

11. Define plexus. Name the major plexuses and describe the distribution and function of the peripheral nerves arising from each plexus. (CO 1,8,10,11)

12. Compare and contrast the motor endings of somatic and autonomic nerve fibers. (CO 1,8,10,11)

13. Outline the three levels of the motor hierarchy. (CO 1,8,10,11)

14. Compare the roles of the cerebellum and basal nuclei in controlling motor activity. (CO 1,8,10,11)

15. Name the components of a reflex arc and distinguish between autonomic and somatic reflexes. (CO 1,8,10,11)

16. Compare and contrast stretch, flexor, crossed-extensor, and tendon reflexes. (CO 1,8,10,11)

17. Describe two superficial reflexes. (CO 1,8,10,11)
