Welcome to Module 4

In this module, we will discuss why poverty leads to a housing crisis, and an employment crisis and why when a person is poor, their health is poor. We will look at why access to care is not the same for all people. We will see why racism and other forms of discrimination continue to be perpetuated. Lastly, we will look at how gender and health disparities faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and even a person’s zip code can influence health.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

Discuss the relationship between poverty and economic insecurity including a look at housing and employment (CLO: 1,4,7, 8, 11)
Describe the link between a person’s socioeconomic position and their health. (CLO: 1,4,7, 8, 11)
Discuss how healthcare disparities affect access to care. (CLO: 11)
Recognize disparities in health as a metric for assessing health equality (CLO: 11)
Recognize what processes perpetuate racism and other forms of discrimination within healthcare. (CLO: 11)
Explain how gender, health disparities faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and even zip code influences health (CLO: 1,2,5,6,8,11,12)
