The weekly reading reflections should include the following:
3 main ideas from the chapter
2 things that stood out to you as interesting or note-worthy
1 question the reading raised for you
Here is an example for you to follow:
3 Main Ideas
- Ethnicity is defined as a group with a shared culture like race many groups identify with an ethnicity and the term is hard to define while has also changed over time. Unlike race however ethnicity focuses far more on the belief aspect over the physical characteristics.
- Minority Groups are defined as any group that due to physical or social characteristics are alienated or treated unfairly by society due to their beliefs.
- Discrimination is defined as actions taken against a group of people due to their beliefs being different from yours. This is different from Prejudice as that is rarely actions but a mindset.
Two Interesting Facts
- I find it interesting how with multiple identities how people usually pick one part of their heritage to migrate too and ignore the other parts they associate with less.
- I find it interesting how during expulsion, so little is done to protect the people who are being taken away for when they return like during the Japanese internment camps.
One Question (multiple examples of discussion questions from previous classes – you only need to submit one)
- If we have all experienced prejudice and discrimination and we can all agree it’s not a good thing, why do we continue to be prejudiced and discriminate against other people?
- What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination? Have you ever experienced any form of that against you?
- Do you believe white people can experience racism?
