Chapter 1 of our textbook includes some information about dialogic communication and I-thou relationships. We can connect these concepts with some real communication you have had. We can ask whether speakers are made or born. The "I-Thou" relationship can relate to the concept of extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation in learning. The "thou" concept is embodied in the Amish culture, which uses it as a personal pronoun. We can see an example of this in the film "Witness." The reference to this sub-culture within the USA, and is an example of language varieties, and how the science of linguistics regards different ways of speech. That's something which interests me.
I would like you to find something in the textbook which interests you, and to present it to us, tell us why it interests you, try to connect it with some other concept of communication, or an example of communication.
So, I am trying to model the homework assignments I give to you, and get you into the spirit of building upon anything we do, and making connections with both things we have done, and with new things. If we can all get into this cycle, we will make good progress quickly.
One further question to leave you with is: We are learning to do things (speak) and we are learning about speaking. The real challenge and way of improvement is to find a way to use what you learn about speaking, into your own speeches. So, I always have this question for you: How are you making use of what you are learning about speaking, in your own speaking. That's the key to continuing and rapid improvement. To excel, a person needs both to know about (i.e., awareness) and how (i.e., performance).
How are you combining your increasing awareness about speaking with your own performance as a speaker? This is the key to rapid progress!
