Course Description:

This college level algebra course expands upon a student’s knowledge by further developing algebraic concepts. Topics include factoring polynomials, operations on rational functions, simplifying rational exponents, solving quadratic equations, and an introduction to graphing polynomial functions.  Students will be required to complete homework assignments using a web-based computer program.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites: None

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Solve a system of linear equations using the substitution or elimination method. (CLO 1)
  2. Factor quadratic expressions including special cases. (CLO 2)
  3. Apply the quadratic formula. (CLO 3)
  4. Solve quadratic equations. (CLO 4)
  5. Graphing quadratic functions. (CLO 5)
  6. Add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify polynomial functions. (CLO 6)
  7. Solve polynomial functions. (CLO 7)
  8. Identify polynomial functions and their end behavior. (CLO 8)
  9. Determine multiplicity of solutions of polynomial functions. (CLO 9)
  10. Sketch the graph of polynomial functions including cubic, quartic, quantic and polynomial functions with higher degree. (CLO 10)

Course Materials & Resources:

You will be provided access to a Pearson MyMathLab account.

Grading Policy:

  • Assessments: 40%
    • 3 Major Assessments will be given.  (These dates are subject to change.)
    • Assessment 1: July 16th
    • Assessment 2: July 30th
    • Final Exam: August 6th
  • Check Ins: 45%
    • Each day will end with a check in.  Some will be quick mini quizzes, while others might be a little bit more in depth.  You will have plenty of time to ask any questions before each check in and your lowest check in score will be dropped at the end of the semester.  If you miss a class, the check in you miss will count as your one lowest score dropped.  There will be no make ups for check ins.
  • Classwork/Homework: 15%
    • Some homework will be completed on MyMathLab.  All homework assignments will be graded on effort not accuracy. There will often be class time to work on these assignments, but they may carry over to outside of class time.

Attendance & Participation

  • You cannot learn math without doing math, so students are expected to be in class for each of the 10 class meetings. We will be covering multiple topics each day, and these topics will build upon each other.
  • If you know you will be out, reach out as soon as possible via email to let me know.
